.NET Musings

Well, OK, truth be told, we were able to get to press in time for Cyber Monday. So it’s been published for quite some time now. But, between then and now, by blog got hacked, I worked to upgrade it, had issues with the upgrade, blah, blah, blah.  Anyway, my blog is fully functional again, and now I can actually create new posts!   Back to the book…

Last year, while talking to my publisher at Apress about some options for my next book, I was offered the opportunity of a life time.  Andrew Troelsen was looking for a co-author for the seventh edition of his Pro C# book.  I was thrilled to be asked. This book has been my go to book for .NET since the very first edition (I still have all of my copies).  After a several email exchanges and phone calls, it was a go.  I was officially going to co-author the seventh edition!

In addition to the core language features of C#, the goal (and has been since the first edition) was to cover pretty much everything in .NET from soup to nuts.  My job was to update the framework chapters as well as add some additional chapters that weren’t covered in the previous edition.  We also had to remove a few chapters from the last edition that we decided had passed their born on date (they were moved into appendices so the information isn’t gone).  

When you cover as many topics as .NET offers (and the list keeps on growing), you can’t cover everything each framework has to offer.  That was probably the biggest challenge.  How do you cover Entity Framework 6 in one chapter?  The answer is very carefully!  There is a lot of great material from all of the chapters that ended up on the cutting room floor.

Anyway, the book is published, and I’m very proud of the final product!  And if you see me out and about at a conference, I’d be happy to sign it for you!
